THE SORCERER, by Gilbert and Sullivan
At the behest of a well-meaning but thoroughly misguided toff, a mysterious “dealer in magic and spells” administers a love-potion to an entire village. The consequences are inevitable and hilarious as the villagers form passionate, and entirely unsuitable, attachments to each other.
First performed in 1877, The Sorcerer was the first full-length opera by Gilbert & Sullivan, crammed with delightful songs, witty dialogue and archetypal satire.
